Growing up in the heart of Indianapolis, IN, on the far east side, my journey into the world of piano tuning and repair was a melody that evolved from a childhood filled with the enchantment of music. From my earliest memories, the piano held an irresistible allure. I found solace in its keys, often stopping to play and explore its resonant tones.
Formal piano lessons began around second grade, revealing the wonders of the musical realm. Simultaneously, a burgeoning love for the pipe organ captured my fascination. Inheriting a player piano presented an opportunity for a significant project involving repairs to its pneumatics, a challenge I eagerly embraced alongside my father. The summer of 2015 marked a pivotal moment at the Pipe Organ Encounter (POE) in Valparaiso, IN, deepening my passion for music and the majestic pipe organ.
Furthering my musical education, I took organ lessons from a professor in Indianapolis while actively participating in New Palestine High School's vibrant band program. From concerts to Jazz to marching bands, my musical journey expanded. Jazz became a unique avenue to blend my love for playing both trumpet and piano, creating harmonies that resonated with my soul.
However, a detour led me to explore the world of emergency medical services. Inspired by family ties to the profession, I completed EMT school and ventured into paramedic training soon after high school. While building crucial skills, I inadvertently distanced myself from the music that had been an integral part of my life.
A pivotal moment came when I returned to the dormant player piano project, reigniting my love for music. Playing the pipe organ at my church awakened a dormant passion, prompting me to reconsider my path. Recognizing the neglected state of my two pianos over the past two decades, I sought the expertise of Bob Bonner, a local piano technician recommended by my church's music director.
Bob's arrival at my home for piano tuning proved to be a transformative encounter. As he worked, he noticed my keen interest and took the time to share insights into the world of piano technology. Inspired by his guidance, I tuned a piano string for the first time, an experience that left an indelible mark. (The first note I ever tuned was D4.)
That evening, fueled by newfound enthusiasm, I delved into the journey of becoming a piano technician. Bob's recommendations led me to acquire essential tools, signaling the commencement of this exciting chapter in my life. Balancing my expanding role as a church organist, I sold my house. I am pursuing further education at Concordia University Ann Arbor, immersing myself in the study of Church Music with a focus on traditional church music and organ.
This journey, shaped by an unwavering love for music, has brought me to the harmonious intersection of passion and profession, where every chord struck resonates with the echoes of a transformative odyssey.
